Police shoot, kill man after carjacking

Chicago police shot and killed a man late Tuesday on the city's Far South Side, officials said this morning.

The shooting occurred after a motorist was robbed at gunpoint of his Ford pickup truck at about 10:30 p.m. in the 10700 block of South Michigan Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood, according police union officia
After flagging down a passing Calumet District squad car, the victim gave police a description of gunman, and officers quickly broadcast it over police radio, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said.

About 10 minutes later, officers in another squad car spotted a Ford F150 truck near the intersection of 100th Street and Calumet Avenue and called for backup, fearing that the driver might flee when they approached, Camden said.

The truck's driver indeed fled before backup arrived, leading officers on a brief pursuit that ended with the truck crashing into a tree in the 10500 block of South Lafayette Avenue. The truck's driver fled on foot before being tackled twice by officers who gave chase, Camden said.

After being tackled by officers the second time, the driver reached for something, leading an officer to believe he was reaching for a weapon, Camden said. Fearing for his life, the officer shot the driver, who later died, Camden said. A weapon from the suspect was recovered, he added.

None of the officers involved was injured, he added. Police determined that the pickup driven by the dead man was the same one taken in the carjacking, Camden said.

A police spokesman wouldn't confirm Camden's account, saying police officials would release details later today.

A source told the Tribune that the offender was dead at the scene.

The dead man was an 18-year-old who lived on the block where the truck crashed into the tree, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The Tribune is withholding the man's identity pending family notification.

A spokesman with the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates police shootings, confirmed that a shooting involving officers had occurred, but had no other details.
