Man dies after jumping from moving CTA train to third rail

A 62-year-old man was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon after he jumped from a moving train and was electrocuted on the third rail on the southbound CTA Red Line tracks near the Dan Ryan Expressway, officials said.
Firefighters were called out about 3:40 p.m. near 76th Street on the Dan Ryan for a report of a man on the southbound tracks of the CTA Red Line, said spokesman Larry Langford.
When they arrived, firefighters found a man who apparently made contact with the third rail, Langford said.
After firefighters pulled the seriously injured man from the tracks, he was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Langford said firefighters have no idea how the man landed on the tracks because there was no overpass or platform where he was found.
Preliminary reports said the man apparently jumped from a moving northbound train and landed on the southbound tracks, police said.
A passenger on the train, Saalik Ziyad, said the man appeared to be disturbed. "I saw him walk past me and he didn't look well," he said. "He was pacing back and forth."
Ziyad said the man, who has not been identified, then pulled the red emergency door release and walked out of the doors, said Ziyad. He said some passengers tried unsuccessfully, to stop him.
