Chicago police shot and killed a suspect in a foot chase Tuesday night after he had opened fire at them, police said this morning.
The shooting happened about 11 p.m. at 123rd Street and Lowe Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, an area police noted was known for gang and drug activity.
Three uniformed tactcal officers were near 124th and Wallace Streets, where they spotted two men One of the two was seen reaching in his waistband as if he was carrying a gun, authorities said, citing preliminary information.
That man started running north from the scene, while the other stayed behind, authorities said. The officers ran after the first man, who then turned around and opened fire at them, but missed, authorities said.
The officers returned fire at the shooter, who continued fleeing on foot, police said. A chase ensued, and when the suspect abruptly turned toward the officers, they fired again, striking him, police said.
That shooter, who the Cook County medical examiner's office said was believed to be 25 to 30 years old, died. Authorities said a gun was recovered at the scene. No officers were reported injured, authorities said
