Blaze injures firefighter, 2 cops on South Side

From the street below, Juanita Bradley stared in disbelief at the charred remains of her top-floor apartment destroyed tonight by an extra-alarm fire on the South Side.
I’ve lost everything,” said Bradley, 34. “How did the fire get all the way up there?”

In 80 degree weather, firefighters fought to douse a fast-moving blaze inside a brick apartment building in the 7900 block of South Dobson Avenue Friday evening.

No major injuries were reported, though a firefighter was treated for a minor laceration at the scene, fire officials said. With black smoke still curling out of the building, the injured firefighter was able to return to service.

Two Chicago police officers who suffered smoke inhalation at the scene where taken to University of Chicago Hospitals. They later were treated and released.

“They went in looking for one particular victim and the victim was not in the building,” Chicago Police News Affairs officer Darryl Baety said.

The fire started shortly before 4 p.m. By the time help arrived, the fire had spread to all four floors of the building and flames were bursting from windows.

After calling for additional manpower by raising the response to a 3-11 alarm, firefighters brought the blaze under control by about 6 p.m.
