His train car had barely come to rest after a collision at Union Station this morning when Sean Lee was called into action.
"Everybody was just looking at each other like, 'That's something bad,' Lee said. Then Metra employees rushed through the car yelling, "Emergency, emergency, is there a doctor?"
I'm a medic," he told him.
"Come with me, come with me," one of the workers said.
Lee was ushered to the front car, which was crushed on the upper right side. "It was caved in entirely."
First, he spotted a man in his middle to late 40s on the lower floor of the train who had been hit by debris and possibly suffered a broken rib. Then he saw two other men on the upper deck who were "much worse." One had hit his head and "clearly had a concussion," Lee said, though he was "conscious and talking." The other man had suffered serious cuts to his right arm and shoulder.
Lee said he checked all three, then decided he first had to control the bleeding of the third man with bandages from the train's First Aid kit. He also made sure the man with a possible concussion remained conscious until paramedics arrived in about 10 or 15 minutes.
“They were very thankful and kind, and seamlessly relieved me, taking over applying pressure to wounds," Lee said.
Lee works in the personnel department of the Warranty Group downtown but has been certified as a medic. This is the first time called on during an emergency.
