Two men face felony drug charges after police arrested them in connection with the possession of 800 pounds of marijuana and seized more than $60,000 cash, police said.
Arnulfo Saldana, 49, and Hugo Sanchez, 38, of Washington State, were arrested after police were tipped off about drug activity near 58th Street and Pulaski Road in the West Elsdon neighborhood east of Midway Airport. Sanchez was arrested about 12:15 p.m. Thursday driving a vehicle with "a large quantity" of marijuana and $57,000 in cash inside, according to a police news release.
Police obtained a warrant and searched Saldana's home in the 4000 block of West 81st Street in the Scottsdale neighborhood and found about 800 pounds of marijuana, according to the release.
Police estimated the marijuana to be worth more than $2.5 million, which would mean about $3,125 a pound for the marijuana.
Saldana faces felony marijuana possession and distribution charges and Sanchez faces a felony charge of marijuana possession. Saldana was held in lieu of $350,000 bail and Sanchez was held in lieu of $100,000 bail after a hearing before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Laura Marie Sullivan on Friday, according to court records.
They are scheduled to appear again in court on June 27.
