Chicago police narcotics officers seized nearly $3 million in marijuana and arrested 48 people as part of a focused drug crackdown on the city's West Side, authorities said today.
Police also seized $15,000 in drug proceeds and about 20 guns, including two folding Kel-Tec assault rifles, after serving search warrants on Thursday in various West Side areas with high drug crime.
These missions, which teamed officers from two police districts with drug and gang cops to go after drug dealers, were a strategic response to neighborhood concerns over drug violence, police said in a news release.
In the course of serving 56 individual warrants, police recovered 800 pounds of marijuana valued at just under $2.7 million, police said.
The 48 people arrested face drugs- and weapons-related charges, police said.
