An off-duty deputy U.S. marshal shot and wounded a man tonight in the city's Northwest Side, officials said.
The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of North Bingham Street, said Chicago police, correcting early reports that the shooting happened on nearby Milwaukee Avenue.
The 20-year-old man who was shot in the upper thigh was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, said police spokesman Officer Veejay Zala.
Two off-duty deputy U.S. marshals were on Bingham when they saw the 20-year-old man, carrying a handgun and chasing after someone, Zala said.
The federal officers approached with their weapons drawn and identified themselves to the gunman, Zala said. When the gunman turned around still holding the weapon, one of the marshals opened fire, striking the man, Zala said.
Belkis Cantor, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Marshals Service Chicago office, confirmed the shooting, but wasn’t immediately able to confirm the police information or provide additional details.
