Two men were ordered held on sizeable bonds today in the fatal beating of a 50-year-old man outside a tavern in the Little Village neighborhood.
Adrian Garcia, 27, and Mauricio Ortiz, 20, were each charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Armando Corral outside La Roka bar at 30th Street and South St. Louis Avenue early Monday. A third suspect was being questioned by detectives, police said.
Prosecutors said Corral had been sitting by himself drinking a beer at the bar. As he was leaving the bar, shortly before 2 a.m., the three men followed him outside and attacked him from behind, striking him over the head with beer bottles and then punching and stomping him while he was motionless on the ground.
Garcia was seen rifling through the victim’s pockets after the attack and removing cash from his wallet, according to prosecutors.
Corral, of the 3000 block of South Christiana Avenue, suffered severe head trauma and internal injuries and was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital a short time later. Police said he was 55 years old.
Witnesses provided police with detailed descriptions of the suspects, and Garcia and Ortiz were arrested later Monday morning, Garcia about 7:30 a.m. and Ortiz about 11:30 a.m., police records show.
Judge Israel Desierto set bond at $500,000 for Ortiz and $600,000 for Garcia.
