Devonta Guyton, 18, and Anthony Ward, 20, each was charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 2, 2008 slaying of Muhammad Sharif outside the Chicken Shack restaurant, 2145 S. Pulaski Rd., which he managed.
Sharif, 41, was carrying $250 to another nearby restaurant to get change when he was attacked and beaten by both defendants, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney John Maher said.
“Guyton then pulled a revolver out of his waistband and struck the victim several times in the head,” Maher said.
“He then shot Mr. Sharif one time in the head at point-blank range” and both defendants fled, according to Maher.
Sharif, of the 900 block of West Winona Street, died at the scene.
Less than three months after the homicide, Ward was arrested in an unrelated incident and charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and unlawful use of a weapon.
The handgun he was carrying in that case was later tested at the Illinois State Police crime lab and found to be the weapon used in Sharif’s slaying, Maher said.
Police also used surveillance video from a nearby gas station to develop leads, and matched DNA from two bloody T-shirts found near the scene to the defendants, Maher said. When detectives confronted Ward with the evidence this week, he admitted Guyton had shot Sharif in “a robbery gone bad.”
Both Guyton, of Crest Hill, and Ward, of the 1200 block of South Sawyer Avenue, currently are serving prison terms for a 2009 aggravated robbery, records show.
Circuit Judge Ramon Ocasio III denied bond for Guyton and set a $1 million bond for Ward
