Prentice Phillips, 48, of Evanston, was charged today with first-degree murder in the beating death of Margaret Blair, who was 81office. Investigators were able to have DNA evidence collected at the time of the attack analyzed this year using a cold-case grant, and it matched Phillips.
Blair was beaten, robbed and sexually assaulted after an intruder forced his way into her basement apartment in the 7200 block of North Sheridan Road about 3 a.m. on July 11, 1988, police said. She died four days later at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
In that case, Phillips tried to sexually assault a woman with multiple sclerosis last summer in Evanston, the charges alleged. He knew she was physically disabled.
According to the charges, he tried to embrace the woman, telling her, “No means yes to me,” and then bit her on the buttocks.
Phillips also stalked the woman by twice going to her residence, pounding on her door and demanding to be let in.
He was being held on $100,000 bail on charges of aggravated battery to a disabled person, stalking and attempted criminal sexual assault
