Angel Mendez, 15, has been charged as an adult with murder in the slaying of Ezequiel Velasquez, 17, who was beaten early on New Year's Day and died Jan. 9.
Mendez, of the 4600 block of South Rockwell Street, is the second person charged in the killing of Velasquez. Mendez was 14 at the time of the fatal attack.
Vincent Lopez, 23, of the 5800 block of South Whipple Street, was charged with murder in August after being arrested in July on an unrelated burglary charge. Lopez is being held without bail on charges including murder, carjacking and arson.
Velasquez, along with a 21-year-old woman, was in the 2900 block of West 40th Street in the Brighton Park neighborhood about 6 a.m. Jan. 1 when he stopped the Chrysler Sebring he was driving because a Chevrolet Suburban was blocking his path.
Velasquez got out of the car and was beaten with a bottle and had his head smashed against a parked car. The woman was ordered out of the car and the attackers drove off in the Sebring, using it to push the apparently disabled SUV.
The Sebring later was found burned in the 4200 block of South Campbell Avenue, a little less than a mile away from where the attack took place.
The Cook County medical examiner's office determined Velasquez died from blunt force trauma to the head in a homicide.
Lopez, the man already charged in Velasquez's slaying, was arrested in July on a burglary charge connected with the March 24, 2011 break-in at a home in the 5400 block of West 63rd Place. He originally was ordered held in lieu of $80,000 bond in that case, but in August, he was ordered held without bail after he was charged with murder in Velasquez's slaying.
