Joel R. West, 31, faces felony aggravated battery and armed robbery charges in connection to the incident, which happened Saturday morning at the business in the 3100 block of South Wallace Street in the Bridgeport neighborhood.
A 44-year-old woman arrived at the business at 8 a.m. Saturday for work and had her 7-year-old son in tow.
She walked into the store and West came crawling out of the ceiling, causing a ceiling panel to crash to the floor in front of them.
It was unclear Sunday how West got in to the ceiling.
Once he was on the ground, West brandished a knife and demanded the woman open a security door.
The woman refused and West pushed her into a corner, put the knife to her chin and punctured her skin.
West then took the victim's keys and the victim's son and walked to the security door.
The woman begged the man to let her son go and West did,.
At some point, the woman was able to activate the store's alarm system.
West fled and was found in a stairwell a few blocks away.
He again tried to flee but was apprehended shortly after.
Surveillance cameras captured the incident and West escaped without any money.
West of the 6600 block of South Oakley Avenue, was returned to the scene and the victim identified him
