A Chicago Public Schools Safe Passage monitor was the victim of an attempted drive-by shooting as she was working on her South Side route Tuesday morning.
The 36-year-old woman, dressed in a bright yellow vest, was monitoring a
Mollison Elementary School Safe Passage route near 47th Street and Wabash Avenue
about 9 a.m. Tuesday when a black Audi pulled up, drove past and then backed up. One of the car windows rolled down and several shots were fired
from inside the car before the vehicle sped off.
After ducking for cover, the woman, who was not injured, reported the
incident first to her Safe Passage employer, Bright Star Community Outreach, and
then to police. Police interviewed two
witnesses to the incident, including another Safe Passage monitor. The Safe
Passage witness is hearing-impaired and did not hear gunfire, but the second witness reported hearing the shots.
The woman told police that she earlier was moved from another Safe Passage
route because of an ongoing dispute with her estranged husband, a reputed
