A man died on his 32nd birthday after he and two other people were struck by a
speeding car as they crossed the street in the South Side's Marynook
neighborhood Tuesday night.
The 17-year-old driver of a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta was taken into custody
after he tried to flee the scene on foot.
About 8:30 p.m., the driver was traveling southbound on South Blackstone
Avenue at a high speed when he struck three pedestrians who were crossing the
street and a 2012 Pontiac Sunfire traveling westbound on 83rd Street.
A 32-year-old pedestrian, whose name has not yet been released, was
pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center.
Two other pedestrians were struck as well and were taken to local hospitals
for treatment. A 21-year-old man was listed in good condition at Jackson Park
Hospital, and a 31-year-old woman was taken to South Shore Hospital, where her
condition was stabilized.
The driver of the Sunfire refused medical treatment.
The 17-year-old boy has not yet been charged.
