A second man has been charged with the killing of a South Side man earlier this
month after a verbal altercation in which one of the offenders promised to
return with a gun.
Charles McKinney, 26, of the 800 block of East 65th Street, was charged with
first-degree murder for the Sept. 1 killing of John Wallace, 25.
Wallace
was shot dead around 11:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Morgan Street in the
Englewood neighborhood. He and Victor Willis, who had previously
been charged in the slay, had argued while on the porch and Willis left saying:
“I’ll be back with my gun’’
Willis, 22, of the 5700 block
of South Michigan Avenue, was ordered held without bail in the
shooting.
Police said McKinney returned with Willis a short time after
the initial altercation and fired shots, striking the victim.
Prosecutors said the men and others were told to leave a porch, One of
the men left with his girlfriend in a van. But a few minutes later, he came back
with Willis in the same van, being driven by his girlfriend.
One of the witnesses was now sitting on a porch across
the street and saw Willis, who he knows as “Vic” wearing a red hoodie and
holding a handgun with an extended clip as Willis and the the other man exited
the van and approached the porch.
The victim,
who was not involved in the prior altercations and “just happened” to be there
at the time, answered the door. When he refused to tell Willis where one of the
people were, Willis began firing several shots into the building hitting the
victim five times, before entering the home, raising the gun, and still firing,
