Oliver Spann of the 700 block of North Trumbull Avenue was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Elvis Canfield, 51. Canfield was stabbed several times during an early morning fight on Aug. 28 on the 3900 block of West Division Street.
Shortly after 1 a.m. that day, Canfield, of the 1100 block of North Pulaski Road and Spann got into a fight. Canfield was stabbed in the chest and shoulder, then stumbled around a parked car before collapsing on the sidewalk.
Before collapsing Canfield had grabbed a pole outside a store and left a bloody hand print at the scene.
He was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
Spann was arrested for the slaying after he was identified as the person who stabbed Canfield. The victim was the current boyfriend of a woman that Spann had previously dated

This is a sad and tragic situation, and nobody wins in the end. You can't make someone want you, and eveyone is not compatible to be together. My heart goes out to all families involved.
