A Chicago man held an elevator door shut as his friend robbed a man with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair at Chicago Union Station last week.
Demetrius Thomas, 48, of the 1400 block of S. Canal St., held the elevator
door as another man, who was not identified in Cook County bond court Saturday,
took a cellphone out of the purse wrapped around the waist of the man in the
Thomas told Amtrak police about his involvement after he was recognized by an
officer in surveillance video taken of the incident, which occurred Aug. 21 at
Chicago Union Station, 225 S. Canal St.. Thomas told police he knew the man was
being robbed and he “felt bad for the poor guy in the wheelchair” .
Thomas was charged with robbery of a handicapped victim, a Class 1 felony
