A woman was beaten to death with a metal flag pole in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side over the weekend.
The woman was identified by police and the Cook County medical examiner's office as Patricia Martin, 40, of the 10000 block of South Princeton Avenue.
An autopsy conducted Monday indicated that blunt abdominal trauma contributed to Martin's death.
Martin reported two separate attacks Saturday at her home involving the same man. She was pronounced dead at Roseland Hospital shortly after midnight.
Martin had allowed a man to stay at her home Friday night and when she asked him to leave the next day, he became violent and punched her in the head. He took her keys and fled. The woman refused medical treatment but made a report.
Later, police received another call from Martin, who said she had been battered. She said she had walked out of her home when the same man threw an 8-foot-long metal flag pole and hit her in the chest. The man picked up the pole and threw it through the front window. The man then fled the area.
Witnesses told police they saw the man hit Martin and break the window. According to a witness, the man said she owed him $200. Martin filed a second police report.
