Man arrested in Florida held without bail in girlfriend's death

A 39-year-old man was ordered held without bail today after being arrested in Florida and charged with strangling his girlfriend last year because he found texts from another man on her phone.
Angel Santiago was arrested in Florida where he lived in Florida City and worked as a Krispy Kreme doughnut driver, according to court records. bail.
Santiago was arrested by the FBI and Homestead Florida police on June 26,. Officials were acting on an arrest warrant issued on Jan. 29, 2012 that named Santiago for identity theft.
In addition to the identity theft charge, Santiago was charged with first- degree murder in the slaying of his girlfriend Antonia Berrios, 33.
Berrios was found dead in her home on Jan. 24, 2012 on the 2000 block of South May Street by an aunt after family had not heard from her for about five days.
Police found several sticky notes on the kitchen on which someone had written, "Because of Michael this happened," "See you on the other side, goodbye," "give all of my belongings to my kids," "tell my kids I love them and I'm sorry."
Police also found a sticky note in the garbage can where someone had written, "Now we can be together for eternity." In the bathroom sink police found vomit mixed with pills.
In addition, police found a noose fashioned from a heavy duty extension cord placed over a beam on the ceiling.
After police began investigating, the discovered that the woman' car was missing and discovered that the woman's debit card had been used at several stores including the Greyhound bus station in Chicago.
Several withdrawal requests were denied including one at the bus station at 630 W. Harrison St. The woman's car was found abandoned a block from the station. At that point, police discovered that Santiago had purchased a bus ticket to Miami on Jan. 22, 2012 using cash.
After Santiago was tracked to Florida and arrested, police took a DNA sample from him which matched DNA found on the sticky notes, the vomit, electrical cord and the steering wheel of the woman's car.
On Thursday, he confessed to detectives that he had strangled Berrios after he found text messages on her cell phone and discovered that she had began a relationship with a man named Michael.

He told police that after he strangled the woman, he tried to commit suicide by electrocuting himself in the bathtub and taking pills but vomited them out. He then admitted using her debit card and buying the bus ticket to Miami, Dillman said.

At the time the woman's body was found her body had decomposed and the cause and manner of her death was not able to be determined, Dillman said. The medical examiner's office cannot rule out strangulation as the cause of death, Dillman said. If convicted he faces life in prison
