Alex, of the 300 block of West 92nd Street in Chicago, shook his head in court
as Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. denied bail.
“There is no
amount of money I can set to keep the world safe from you,” Bourgeois told the
burly defendant.
Prosecutors said the victim had left her Dodge Caravan
unlocked about 6:15 a.m. while she went into a gas station in the 10700 block of
Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond to pay for gas, coffee and cigarettes. Alex
climbed into the backseat of the vehicle and hid until the woman returned and
drove away, according to prosecutors.
“As the victim was driving, she
noticed movement in the rear of her vehicle,” Assistant State’s Attorney Joell
Zahr said.
Alex, wearing a black ski mask, varsity-style jacket and a
Chicago Bulls hooded sweatshirt, climbed into the seat directly behind her and
ordered her to keep driving,” Zahr said. He also threatened to stab and kill her
if she ignored his commands or “made any sudden movements,” she
said.
A parolee hid in a woman’s van as she paid for gas at a northwest Indiana filling
station last month, forced her to drive into Chicago and sexually assaulted and
robbed her.
Deverick Alex,
22, was charged with aggravated kidnapping, robbery and aggravated criminal
sexual assault in the March 22 attack on the 26-year-old mother who was on her
way to work in Evergreen Park
Alex raped the victim after directing her to drive into an alley in
the 9500 block of South Colfax Avenue on Chicago’s South Side. During
the attack the woman begged Alex not to hurt her because she wanted to make it
home to her son.
He then forced her to drive to a nearby gas
station and withdraw $140 in cash. Alex found the woman’s address on
her driver’s license and threatened to kill her and her son if she ever told
anyone what happened.
After the woman withdrew the
money, Alex used her cell phone to call two acquaintances, then got out of the
van near 89th Street and Lowe Avenue and fled with her phone, money and a gold
ring. The woman immediately called police and was taken to St.
Bernard Hospital.
Zahr said surveillance video from the gas station in
Hammond showed Alex inside the store shortly before the kidnapping dressed in
the same clothing described by the victim. Phone records confirmed the numbers
dialed from the woman’s cell phone matched acquaintances of Alex. One of those
witnesses identified Alex “by name” as the person who called her.
Alex also made admissions to a second witness.
Court records show an arrest warrant was issued for Alex
earlier this week and that he turned himself in to police at the Calumet
District station Tuesday.
At the time of the attack, Alex was on parole
for a 2007 carjacking and armed robbery conviction for which he was sentenced to
8 years in prison, records show. Alex was 16 years old when he
pointed a gun at a motorist and took his wallet and vehicle, telling the victim
he would kill him if he told anyone.
