Man charged in baseball bat beating now faces murder charge
Charges have been upgraded to murder for a man already in custody after police said he beat an 86-year-old man with a baseball bat so badly the man died in September.
Donald Henry, 56, was charged Thursday morning with murder.
Henry has been incarcerated at Cook County Jail since April 23 after a judge set bail at $350,000 for him that day. At that time he'd been charged only with multiple counts of aggravated battery.
Chicago police said that Henry was wielding a wooden baseball bat when he struck Ellison Jordan Jr., 86, in the head during a quarrel on April 21, 2012 in the 1900 block of South Homan Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood.
The critically injured Jordan was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and then transferred to a nursing home in the 2400 block of West Touhy Avenue in West Rogers Park. Though Jordan was declared dead on Sept. 22, 2012 at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, an autopsy was not performed until Oct. 18, and was inconclusive, pending additional studies.
A medical examiner's office spokesman said there was a delay in receiving the body.
People who suffer traumatic deaths or who suffered previous traumas that could have caused their deaths are usually brought to the Stein Institute, the county morgue, for autopsy within a day of their death. The reason for the delay was unclear.
