Teen charged with shooting near Chicago police headquarters

A 19-year-old man will appear in court today, charged with opening fire at a car blocks from Chicago police headquarters as a carload of officers watched.
Demarquez Nelson, of the 1500 block of South Keeler Avenue, stepped into the street in the 3400 block of South Indiana Avenue about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday and started shooting. Police headquarters is a block west and a block south.
Sgt. Ed Beltran, his supervisor and another officer were in an unmarked vehicle down the street.
The officers jumped out and ran after the suspect.
The gunman ran into a parking lot of a fast food restaurant with Beltran closing in. The other officers continued west on 35th Street and planned on running through an alley to cut him off. During the chase, Beltran fired his weapon at the suspect but missed him.
The suspect ran into a nearby senior citizen’s home, and SWAT officers were called to the scene and Nelson was taken into custody. He was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm at a vehicle, aggravated assault to a police officer and unlawful use of a weapon near a school
