A man has been charged in a series of fires set in a Belmont Central neighborhood alley early this morning.
Thomas Walsh, 23, of the 3100 block of North Menard Avenue, has been charged with arson in connection with five fires set around 4 a.m. in the 6100 to 6300 blocks of West Fletcher Street. The fires were set about four blocks west of where Walsh lives.
More than a half dozen garages and trash containers were set on fire in the area, with some of the garages suffering extensive damage. Some were near electrical poles, bringing down wires and creating sparks throughout the alley.
In addition to the garages, cars were ruined and a nearby doctors' office suffered fire and electrical damage.
Chicago Police Bomb and Arson detectives questioned Walsh after police arrested him.
Detectives reviewed security camera footage, looking for images of the arsonist.
When arrested, Walsh was wearing a t-shirt with a Chicago Fire Department logo, as well as engine and truck company numbers on it, but Walsh is not a Fireman.
