A Dolton man gunned down outside his garage Tuesday night allegedly told two robbers that they would have to shoot him, according to Cook County prosecutors.

Darrell Leverson, 19, and Kevin Eason, 16, appeared Sunday in Cook County bond court, charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Derrick Hampton, 52, of the 1000 block of Blouin Drive. They also face charges of robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking in the shooting.

"The victim told the defendants they were just going to have to shoot him, and they did," prosecutors told the judge. They say Leverson and Eason had robbed another man at gunpoint in the same block moments earlier, taking a leather jacket, a PlayStation video game console and $50.

When the first victim heard gunshots, he came to help Hampton, who died later at a hospital in Indiana with one gunshot wound to the chest.

Hampton was shot "in the midst of a crime spree," prosecutors said.

Eason, of the 14000 block of South Michigan Avenue in Riverdale, who prosecutors said was positively identified by several victims, also faces five counts of armed robbery in a string of incidents in the south suburbs. Leverson, of the 14000 block of South LaSalle in Dolton, faces a single charge of armed robbery in the south suburban robberies.

The two were arrested Wednesday after an extensive police search.

Police investigating a robbery that occurred about 4 p.m. Wednesday in Chicago's Brainerd neighborhood radioed in a description of the getaway car. It was later spotted by officers and pursued.

The car crashed near the 14400 block of Halsted Street in Riverdale, and four men fled on foot. Officers from several police agencies converged on the area and ultimately took Leverson and Eason into custody.

Sources say police are also questioning the two in the killing of a truck driver, Gary Clarke. He was shot Tuesday in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, where he had stopped to visit his brother while en route to Canada.

Family members of both Hampton and the defendants were in court to hear the judge deny bail to Leverson and Eason, who was charged as an adult.

Dolton Police Chief Ronald Burge, who also attended the hearing, declined to comment on the case. Serial killers.....!!!
