A routine traffic stop in Naperville Tuesday turned into a nearly $1 million drug bust, according to police.
A K-9 officer stopped a pickup truck near North Aurora Road and Route 59 about 12:25 p.m. Tuesday and became suspicious of its occupants, police said. The police dog, Sabek, alerted the officer to the presence of drugs and a subsequent search turned up about 19 pounds of methamphetamine in the bed of the truck.
Police said the street value of the drugs is about $984,790.
In a news release, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin called it “by far the largest methamphetamine bust we have ever had in Dupage County.”
Jesus A. Rubio, 25, and Edgardo Y. Rodriguez-Sanchez, 20, both from the 4200 block of NE 14th Street, Des Moines, Iowa, were charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine and methamphetamine trafficking, according to court records. Rubio also faces traffic violations of operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device, following too closely, operating an uninsured vehicle and defective car window.
Judge Elizabeth Sexton set bond today at $1 million and the men will have to prove it was raised legally. Great police work.
