A baby girl was pronounced dead after an apartment fire at a West Side building in
the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood late this afternoon.
The fire
was reported shortly after 5 p.m. at a two-story building located on the 3100
block of West Franklin Boulevard.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 5:06 p.m. and arrived two minutes
later.
On arrival, firefighters found heavy fire in the
rear. Upon the primary search, rescuers found an infant in a rear bedroom. The baby was 2 1/2 months old.
Eighteen adults and 12 children were displaced in the fire.
There were fire detectors visible inside the first- and
second-floor apartments but it was not clear if the detectors worked.
A firefighter was injured in the blaze and was taken in good
condition to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.
The fire had been
put out by about 6 p.m.
