A man was shot and killed in the backyard of his apartment building in the
Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side overnight, touching off a police
chase that ended in a crash.
Efrain Cruz, 25, was behind his
home in the 3200 block of West LeMoyne Street when someone approached and opened
fire around 11:40 p.m. Thursday.
About half an hour
later, officers spotted a gray SUV in the neighborhood that matched the
description of one seen near the shooting and started chasing it.
The SUV crashed at North and Central Park avenues, blocks from the
shooting. Four people were taken into custody, including one who jumped out of
the SUV and tried to run. Three officers suffered minor
injuries
Police said the SUV had been stolen, and detectives were investigating whether
it is connected to the slaying on LeMoyne Street, but it appears that it is not
connected. Charges and citations are pending against the four occupants,
