A woman is accused of critically injuring a man by running over him in an SUV and
dragging him for about 30 feet during a gang-related incident late Friday in the
Humboldt Park neighborhood.
Esmeralda Munoz, 29, of the 1600 block of North Kimball Avenue, was charged
with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Munoz was
scheduled to appear in court later today.
About 11 p.m. Friday, police were called to the 3800 block of West North
Avenue after receiving a report that a person had been struck by a vehicle
during a gang disturbance. Police found the victim, who had been with a group of
men that was fighting with another group that included three men and Munoz, who
was in an SUV.
During the melee, one man exited the SUV and began boxing with the
21-year-old victim, who, along with others in his group, began throwing bottles,
cans and newspapers from a garbage can at the SUV.
Munoz then pulled a "big U-turn" and drove onto the sidewalk as some men
jumped out of her way, police said. But the victim had been bending over to pick
up a bicycle and his back was to her. She plowed into him and dragged him for
about 25-40 feet and continued northbound on Hamlin Avenue.
She was taken into custody an hour later, in the 1600 block of North Sawyer
Avenue.
Police said the 21-year-old suffered blunt trauma and internal bleeding and
was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
A liquor store at
3800 W. North Ave. captured the incident on video surveillance and a mirror
broken from the SUV was left in a front yard in the 1600 block of North Hamlin
Avenue
