A 53-year-old man from Memphis was stabbed downtown outside the Lollapalooza music
festival while trying to scalp tickets last night.
The man remains hospitalized in good condition late Saturday morning.
The victim told police he was standing on the northwest corner of Jackson
Boulevard and Michigan Avenue selling tickets at 6:57 p.m. when he was
confronted by a group of four younger men who tried to snatch the tickets out of
his hand.
The victim held onto the tickets and ran away, crossing the street as the
four pursued him and surrounded him at the corner of Adams Street and Michigan
while continuing to try and rob him.
He was trying to push them back when one of the four – a black man between
the ages of 19 and 25 and wearing a red baseball cap, a black shirt, and black
shorts came from this left side, reached across, and stabbed the 53-year-old
man.
A passerby called 911 after the victim cried out for help and he told
responding officers that the four ran away southbound on Michigan Avenue and
west to State Street. It was not clear if they took the tickets.
The Memphis man suffered a stab wound to the upper center part of his abdomen
and needed stitches, police said. Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Meg
Ahlheim said he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where his condition
had stabilized Friday night.
A second suspect had a slim build, was wearing a red cut-off tank top, and
was also black with a dark complexion. The third and fourth suspects were only
described as black men between the ages of 19 and 25
