A 23 year old Cicero man already in custody for ten assaults on the West and
Northwest Sides has been charged today with several more and also faces charges
for punching a detective during line-ups.
Early this
morning Vidal Rainey was charged with four counts of robbery, one count of
aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one count of aggravated criminal sexual
assault, one count of aggravated robbery, one count of attempted robbery and one
count of aggravated battery to a police officer.
The nine
additional charges stem from incidents involving seven more victims, including a
police detective he allegedly punched, according to a law enforcement source.
Rainey now stands accused of assaulting 17 victims including the detective.
Rainey became physical during multiple lineups, six of
which were positive, and struck the detective in the head and body after being
allowed out of the Cook County correctional center for the follow-up
investigation.
Details about the other alleged attacks
were not immediately available.
Last weekend a judge denied bail for
Rainey, of the 5200 block of West 23rd Place. He was initially charged with 14
felonies relating to the string of other attempted criminal sexual assaults and
robberies in the same neighborhoods that involved ten separate
attacks.
During his hearing last weekend, Rainey didn't say anything but
wiped his brow and bowed his head while the charges were read before Cook County
Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr., who denied bail.
"Everyone in
Chicago will sleep better tonight,'' Bourgeois said, shortly before issuing the
no bail order.
"You're a dangerous individual,'' the judge told Rainey,
who was clad in gray sweatpants and a gray sweatshirt. "Police did a good
job.''
Rainey was arrested Aug. 1 in the 5300 block of West Washington
Boulevard in the South Austin neighborhood last week after police put out an
alert and a sketch. A weapon was recovered.
Last weekend at
a news conference, Cmdr. Gary Yamashiroya said Rainey was charged in connection
with 10 attacks, but said he was believed to be responsible for at least 10 more
in the last month.
Last week, Rainey was charged with seven counts of
armed robbery, two counts of attempted criminal sexual assault with a weapon,
two counts of aggravated unlawful restraint, one count of robbery, one count of
attempted aggravated robbery, and one count of attempted armed robbery.
The first attack happened at 1:30 a.m. July 11 in the 1700 block of
North Humboldt Boulevard in the Logan Square neighborhood. A 29-year-old woman
was confronted by a man who displayed a knife and demanded money.
In a news release, police detailed another
attack at 1:10 a.m. July 30 in the 2100 block of North Bingham Street in the
Palmer Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
According to the
release, Rainey came up to a female, told her to drop her cellphone, pulled out
a handgun, pointed it at the victim and demanded money.
The victim said
she didn't have any money and Rainey then demanded that she give him her ATM
card, her personal identification number and her identification. He then
sexually assaulted her, an attack that ended when she resisted and he
fled.
Police later said that Rainey had attempted to use the ATM card
unsuccessfully in the 900 block of North Pulaski Road in the West Humboldt park
neighborhood on the West Side.
