Two men face strong-arm robbery charges after one of them snatched a cell phone
from a woman on the Pink Line and handed it off to the second before both were
caught by Ogden District officers.
Devin Despenza, 20, and
Davonte Williams, 19, were caught after running from the Kedzie Avenue “L” Pink
Line stop following the robbery on an inbound train about 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The woman, 20, was riding the train and
on her phone when Despenza grabbed it and struggled with the victim until he was
able to run away off the train and onto the street at the Kedzie stop, heading
south in the 1900 block of South Kedzie.
The woman followed
Despenza, and saw Williams run past her. Despenza then handed the phone to
Williams, a witness that Despenza ran into as he fled told
police.
Williams and Despenza ran off in different directions, and the
woman was able to flag down police as she kept running after
Despenza.
The Odgen District officers arrested Despenza, and several
other witnesses described Williams to police.
After a broadcast of the
description to police in the area, other offices were able to arrest Williams,
and he and Despenza were identified as the robbers by witnesses.
Despenza, of the 5000 block of South Michigan Avenue, and Williams,
of the 22400 block of South Strassburg Avenue in Sauk Village, were scheduled to
appear in bond court on Thursday.
The woman got her phone back
