A 1-year-old girl whose stepmother called paramedics after she said the girl
began having trouble breathing died from blunt head trauma suffered in child
abuse, the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined today.
Iyonna Davis, of the 10900 block of South Eberhart Avenue, was declared dead
at 9:28 p.m. Saturday at Roseland Hospital. She died from blunt head trauma suffered in child abuse, and
her death was declared a homicide following an autopsy today.
Police were called to Roseland about 8:50 p.m. after paramedics were called
to the girl’s home because she was unresponsive.
A woman described by police as the girl’s stepmother called 911 after the
girl started having trouble breathing, according to police. The woman told
officers she had fed the toddler chicken quesadillas, then after the girl was
done, left her playing on the floor while she went to put away dishes.
When the woman returned her attention to the girl, she was on her back, with
a small amount of vomit on her mouth, and was having trouble breathing. The stepmother told police she then called 911 and started doing
cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the girl.
