Man drowns in Lake Michigan

A former high school football star and rising senior at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale drowned during a late-night swim at a family reunion.
Mahlik Harris’ body was found Thursday floating in Lake Michigan off the 31st Street beach.
The 22-year-old was at a family reunion on his father’s side, relatives said. He disappeared around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Shortly after 7 a.m. the next day, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter searching for the swimmer spotted an object in the water, police said. A boat was dispatched by the Chicago Police Department’s Marine Unit, and officers recovered the body around 7:25 a.m.

This was a drowning accident, not a murder.

Our friend Stopthepresses2 doesn't like to make that distinction. Any public death that might make Chicago seem like a scary place makes a good blog post

In the article, "murder" isn't mentioned. Sometime, between 10 PM (July 4) and 7 AM (July 5), Mahlik drowned.

At 7:25 AM, Mahlik's body was found, without mention of gunshot and/or bullet wounds.

Via media and beach signs, the public is warned about not swimming alone, especially when life guards aren't present.

Lake Michigan swimming and pool swimming aren't the same.

A man's drowning death is the issue, not inferred scariness.
