An 87-year-old World War II veteran walking from a corner store after
purchasing lottery tickets was attacked Monday afternoon by three youths who
beat and robbed him, knocking out his hearing aid and breaking his dentures.
All three, 15, 17, and 20, have been charged early Tuesday.
Rashon Williams, 20, of the 1400 block of Lincoln Avenue in Calumet
City was charged with robbery of a senior citizen while Michael Protho, 17, of
the 3000 block of Woodworth Place in Hazel Crest was charged with robbery of a
senior citizen and reckless conduct. The 35 year old was charged as a juvenile.
Police said the victim suffered a bruised left eye, a laceration under his right eye
and was taken in “stable” condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and
later released.
According to police, two passersby stopped after seeing the attack, including
a man driving south on Western Avenue who noticied the three approach the victim
from behind, beat him up, and then run away.
Officers were called to the scene and used a description the motorist gave to
catch up with the three suspects in the 6800 block of South Artesian Avenue.
One witness positively identified two of the suspects, but the elderly victim
could not identify either of them and said all he could remember was being hit
from behind
