21-year-old man shot dead in Garfield Park

A 21-year-old man was fatally shot by someone who jumped out and opened fire on a group of people in the West Garfield Park neighborhood this afternoon.
The victim was identified as James Thompson, of the 4300 block of West Gladys Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was declared dead at 5:15 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the left side.
The victim was standing with others on the street when a black Dodge Durango pulled up and someone got out and began shooting, striking the victim about 3:24 p.m. The shooter then returned to the SUV and the vehicle fled.
