Workers in a rail yard south of the Loop made a grisly discovery late Tuesday
night: A severed foot near a stretch of tracks.
The booted foot was found just after 10 p.m. in the 1600 block of South
Lumber Street and is believed to belong to a man who was recently struck and
killed by an Amtrak train in Wisconsin.
Authorities believe the foot may have become lodged on the train during the
collision and fell off when the train arrived in Chicago.
The rail yard is shared by Metra and Amtrak trains and is located just west
of the southern branch of the Chicago River.
The foot was taken to the
Cook County medical examiner's office, where a pathologist will examine it later
today
