Suspects in a robbery on the Southwest Side fled police on Interstate 57 and are
believed to have caused a crash that injured at least seven and closed I-57
through Markham.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash about 1:15
p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-57 near 159th Street, according to a release
from the lllinois State Police District Chicago. At least one lane was opening
up about 5 p.m.,
Two people were airlifted from the scene with life-threatening injuries and five
taken to local hospitals by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, but
further details of the crash were not immediately available.
Two people suspected involved in the robbery a little after 1 p.m.
at 117th Street and Western Avenue were in custody, but being treated at
Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Police were called to the scene about 1:06 p.m.
and officers spotted a vehicle believed used by the robbers, O'Brien said. The
robbers fled the area and went onto I-57, but Chicago Police did not pursue
them, O'Brien said, citing preliminary information.
