Police issued a community alert today warning of a recent rash of burglaries
and robberies in the city's West Town neighborhood.
The burglars enter through windows and in some incidents have forced their
way through front doors while the residents are not at home.
Those burglaries have happened during the evening and early morning hours on
the 1800 block of West Erie Street; the 1800 block of West Grand Avenue; the
1000 block of North Winchester Avenue and the 2000 block of West Thomas Street.
There also have been robberies where victims are approached by a man who
displays a handgun and takes cell phones and other property.
Those armed-robberies have occurred in the area of the 2200 to 2300 blocks of
West Huron Street at about 9:30 p.m.
That robber was described by police as a black man between 20 and 30 years
old. He is between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall, and weighing between 175 to
180 pounds, police said. He has short hair and a dark complexion.
