A man under guard at a hospital punched a police officer and ran naked two
blocks to a car dealership, where he was turned away and finally caught by
police.
Jerry Payne, 35, of Wheaton was charged with aggravated battery to a police
officer and escape from a peace officer.
Payne was
initially arrested around 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 2800 block of West Arthington
Street Tuesday after officers saw Payne buy a “small green item”’ later found to
contain heroin.
Payne ran away when police tried to question him and officers gave
chase, finally catching up with him. Officers
took Payne to the Harrison District police station for processing, where he told
authorities he felt ill.
Payne was taken to Mercy Hospital
and Medical Center and placed under police guard. Later that
day, he punched the officer watching him and fled.
