Bail was denied today for a parolee accused of gunning down a man on Memorial
Day in retaliation for a prior shooting involving his girlfriend’s son and
nephew.
Derrick Miles, 33, was charged with first-degree murder in the
slaying of Marley Collins, 19. Prosecutors said Miles went to the 1500 block of
South Spaulding Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Monday, approached the victim as he was
sitting in an empty lot and shot him once through the abdomen.
Miles was
overheard by others nearby yelling “I got your (expletive)” as he fired. Collins, of the 5000
block of West 18th Place in Cicero, was declared dead later that day at Mt.
Sinai Hospital.
Miles was arrested on Tuesday and numerous witnesses
identified him in a police lineup as the gunman,. Police believe
Collins was involved in the shooting Saturday of Miles’ girlfriend’s son and
nephew.
At the time of the slaying, Miles, of the 3100 block of West 15th
Street, was on parole for a 2008 aggravated battery conviction for which he
received 6 years in prison. State records show Miles was paroled
in 2010 and had been scheduled for release from parole this August. He also has
numerous other felony convictions, including narcotics possession and unlawful
use of a weapon
