An Englewood man was ordered held on $200,000 bond today in connection with a
weekend hit-and-run crash that left a 4-year-old girl critically injured on the
South Side.
Cook County prosecutors said Andre Howard admitted to having smoked marijuana
before the crash.
Howard, 22, who lives in the 400 block of West 72nd Street, was
charged with failure to report an accident with injuries, a felony, and cited
for a DUI and driving without insurance.
Prosecutors said Howard was driving his sister's boyfriend to an "L" stop
when he struck the girl at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 7100 block of South
Normal Avenue. Howard slowed down but did not stop as a witness tried
unsuccessfully to run after the car.
The girl was transported to Comer's Children's Hospital in critical
condition. Prosecutors said, suffering from a lacerated spleen as well as
contusions to her lung and liver. Her condition has since stabilized.
Howard surrendered to police about five hours after the crash and gave a
written statement in which he admitted to smoking marijuana
