Motorist killed in early morning crash in Bronzeville

A 21-year-old motorist was killed this morning in a violent, three-vehicle crash on the city's South Side.
The collision happened just before 1 a.m. in the 400 block of East 47th Street, just a short distance from the Harold Washington Cultural Center in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood.
Early reports indicated that a 2008 Toyota Camry was speeding east on 47th Street when it struck one of two vehicles stopped at a red traffic light in the oncoming lanes.
The force of impact caused a 1998 Dodge van that was struck to spin 360 degrees and strike the third vehicle.
Only the drivers were inside each vehicle and all three were taken to Stroger Hospital.
The Camry's 48-year-old driver was listed in serious, but stable condition.
The van's driver, identified as Trezeon Hopkins, 21, of an unknown address, was pronounced dead about an hour later.
The 33-year-old driver of the third vehicle, a Dodge Charger, was treated and released for his injuries.
Police believe excessive speed played a role in the crash, but said it was too soon to tell whether drugs or alcohol also played a role.
No criminal charges had been filed, as the police's Major Accident Investigation Unit continues to probe the crash
