The body of a man was discovered while firefighters were battling a small fire in an abandoned building in Humboldt Park this afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the 1600 block of North Mozart Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. and found the two-flat apartment building on fire.
Investigators believe the fire began outside of a rear enclosed porch and extended inside the porch before it spread to other parts of the building.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control. When firefighters searched the building they found the body of man in the second-floor rear porch.
Officials are not sure if the man died from the fire or other causes, Langford said. An autopsy will be conducted Saturday to determine the cause.
Neighbors told investigators that while the building was abandoned, they had seen people going inside after removing boards that had covered windows of the building.
Fire investigators suspect that the fire may have been ignited from the outside of the porch but they are investigating the cause
