Eighteen people have been charged with selling cocaine and heroin on the
city’s South and West sides after investigations by the FBI and Chicago
police.
A three-year investigation into drug sales in the Englewood
neighborhood resulted in the arrests of eight people and the seizure of five
weapons, more than a kilogram of cocaine and about 500 grams of heroin.
A separate two-month investigation in the Ogden District on the West Side led
to eight other arrests and the recovery of drugs, a semi-automatic pistol, cash
and two stolen vehicles.
The FBI said in a statement that its
investigation is an “ongoing operation” with Chicago police aimed at drug sales
and gang violence.
The Englewood police district – which covers the
Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods – ended 2011 with a 50 percent rise
in homicides over the previous year. From the start of 2012 through April 1, the
district had 15 homicides compared to eight during the same period last year.
The two-month Ogden District investigation was started in February after
a homicide in the area of 1900 S. Troy Street and focused on a drug market
controlled by New Breed gang members.
