Man charged with murder after turning himself in at South Side church

A man charged with murder after turning himself in to detectives at a South Side church is an uncle of the slaying victim's son.
Ronnie Weathersby, 22, of the 7800 block of South May Street, arranged to be arrested at the New Joy Divine Full Gospel Church, 7625 S. Halsted St., about 10:15 a.m. Sunday, in the slaying Friday of Daniel Walker, 23. Cook County Criminal Court Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Weathersby held without bail in a hearing midday today.
Walker, of the 6900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, was shot about 6:30 p.m. Friday as he drove near the 7500 block of South Parnell Avenue and crashed his car into a viaduct near 75th Street and Eggleston Avenue.
A sister of Weathersby had a son with Walker, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney’s office. Prosecutors did not give information about a motive.
Walker was in the driver’s seat of his car, with his girlfriend in the passenger seat, when Weathersby came out of a nearby building Friday evening.
As Walker was pulling a U-turn and was distracted, Weathersby came up to the open driver's side window and put a gun inside the car. Walker put his body over his girlfriend to shield her as Weathersby fired two or three times, and Walker was shot in the left side.
Walker kept driving east from the site of the shooting, and Weathersby fired one or two more shots at the car before taking off. Walker lost control of his car, and crashed into a viaduct nearby.
Bystanders were able to pull Walker out of the car and gave him first aid while others called police . When police arrrived, they asked Walker if he knew who shot him.
"Ronnie Weathersby shot me," Walker replied.
When asked where Weathersby lived, Walker told police that Weathersby lived at 78th and May streets, on the second floor of a building there.
Walker died on the way to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
A passenger in the car also was injured and taken along with Walker to Christ hospital.
Weathersby was identified by a witness in a photo array
