The slaying occurred in the 1900 block of West 23rd Place on the city's Lower West Side just before 11 p.m..
Police were contacted after friends of the 23-year-old victim drove him to the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center. Officers later determined that the victim was shot in the back by a gunman who approached him on the street.
The victim, whose identity was withheld, was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Police said the shooting was gang-related.
