Two people were in custody this morning after two DePaul University students were robbed at gunpoint near their dorm in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
The women, both 19, were walking in the 900 block of West Belden Avenue when someone with a gun approached and grabbed their purses early this morning. The robber then jumped into a waiting car and sped off.
The car was soon spotted by patrol officers hearing east on Willow Street and approaching Larrabee Street, police said. Police pulled it over in the 1500 block North Larrabee Street and detained a 45-year-woman behind the wheel and a passenger.
Inside the car, the officers found the stolen purses, a “replica” gun and a loaded revolver. The students identified the suspects.
Investigators believe the two may have been involved in two other robberies or attempted robberies around the same time overnight: One at Broadway and Belmont Avenue, the other at Pine Grove and Barry avenues about the same time.
