1 dead, 1 in critical condition after 5-story apartment building fire

A man died and his mother was hospitlized after a fifth-floor fire in a 44-unit apartment building on the Northwest Side early Saturday morning.
The fire on the 6400 block of West Belle Plaine Avenue was first reported about 2 a.m.
The man who died, 49, lived in the apartment building, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. It's not clear if his family knows of his death.
He was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. at Resurrection Hospital.
