Robber wounded during struggle hit with attempted murder charge

An Edgewater man was charged days after Chicago police said he was shot in the leg with his own gun while trying to rob another man inside a West Side convenience store.
Police said that Darrick Peterson's plan to rob his 26-year-old victim quickly fell apart when the man fought back inside the store in the 700 block of South Pulaski Road on Sunday afternoon. The scuffle ended with Peterson's pistol firing, striking himself in the leg and hitting an artery, leaving him critically injured,.
The gunshot also grazed an 11-year-old boy inside the store at the time, police said. He was treated and released the night of the shooting.
Peterson, 24, of the 5800 block of North Sheridan Road, was charged Tuesday with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery with a firearm.
The same day that he was charged, a Cook County judge ordered Peterson -- who remained hospitalized at Mount Sinai Hospital at the time -- held on $2 million bond, according to court records.
Peterson and an accomplice, who remained at large, tried robbing the victim outside the store, but the victim ran into the nearby store hoping to evade them, police said, citing early reports. Peterson has a prior felony drug conviction, according to court records.
